The Eater of Worlds is a worm-like Corruption boss with eyes on each segment of its body. It is summoned using the Worm Food from within The Corruption, or by destroying 3 Shadow Orbs.

The Eater of Worlds contains 50 separate segments; destroying any inner segment will split the worm into multiple parts, each with its own Head and Tail. Segments cannot exist on their own; if one segment of a two-piece worm is killed, the other segment will die as well. Once every segment of the boss is destroyed, the boss is considered defeated.

Fighting the Eater of Worlds is the only way to obtain Shadow Scales, which are required to craft the Nightmare Pickaxe, The Breaker, and Shadow Armor.

Attempting to summon the Eater of Worlds with Worm Food while another is still alive will instantly kill the player. Since the boss is a worm, piercing attacks (such as the Vilethorn) are the most effective way to kill it. During Hardmode, killing the Eater of Worlds is useful for farming items such as Souls of Night or Corruption Key Molds, since each segment counts as a different kill.

The Eater of Worlds is immune to the Poisoned, On Fire!, and Cursed Inferno debuffs.
