Dirt Blocks are one of the most common block types in the game, covering a huge chunk of the world's surface. Most of the time, the player will spawn in the Forest biome, which consists mainly of dirt and small deposits of early-game ore. Often, the top layer of dirt will have grass covering it, whether it's regular grass, corrupt grass, crimson grass, or hallowed grass. Most Pickaxes will mine dirt with one hit (but requires another hit to remove grass beforehand, if necessary).
The amount of dirt naturally found decreases with depth. In the Cavern layer, stone blocks make up about half of all tiles, with the amount of dirt decreasing until the end of the Cavern layer.
After Hardmode is activated, mud blocks can turn into dirt blocks if there is a corruption-spreading block within 3 tiles.
